The Quarry at Carrigan Farm

Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)

Nestled in the heart of Mooresville, NC, the Quarry at Carrigan Farms provided an ideal locale for our adventurous family to cool off and let loose this summer. A well-balanced blend of exhilarating water sports, stunning natural beauty, and rustic charm, the Quarry was a surprise package we did not expect when planning our family vacation.

Steeped in history, Carrigan Farms is a five-generation family-run farm dating back to the 1750s. Originally a cotton/tobacco farm, it now thrives as a fruit and vegetable producer. The farm’s crown jewel, however, is the Quarry, a serendipitous find during granite mining in the late 1960s.

Upon arriving at the Quarry, we were greeted by an attendant who directed us to the parking area. After signing the waivers, we chose to equip ourselves and the kids with life vests instead of taking the swim test. This decision saved us some time and gave us peace of mind as we embarked on our water-filled adventures.

The Quarry’s enchanting landscape was a sight to behold – rocky cliffs juxtaposed with emerald green water under the clear blue sky. The kids were eager to take the plunge from the high jump-off point, and with the lifeguards attentively on duty, we parents felt reassured. The water temperature, at a comfortable 79 degrees, was pleasantly warmer than most swimming spots we had visited.

The rope swing was a hit with both kids and adults, albeit with a required pull-up test and a minimum height restriction of 54 inches. For those less inclined towards thrill-seeking, the Quarry also offered a walk-in area for a more leisurely swim. The sand beach volleyball area added to the variety of activities, ensuring that there was never a dull moment.

However, potential visitors should keep in mind that swimming is only permitted during Open Swim times, and an online reservation is required, along with a $5 deposit per person. Walk-in customers may not receive the $5 dining voucher offered to each reserved guest for use at the Quarry Kitchen. The kitchen offers a selection of snacks and refreshments and operates on a cash-only basis. No outside food or drinks are permitted, and neither are pets.

The admission cost varies depending on the day and time, ranging from $20 to $35 per person. While reservations can be canceled with a refund up to 24 hours prior, the refund is forfeited beyond that timeframe.

In terms of preparation, be sure to pack swimwear, sunblock, water, towels, and a camera to capture the moments. Remember, no alcohol, glass, pets, paddleboards, large rafts, or grills are allowed at the Quarry.

While we loved our time at the Quarry, the 4-star rating is primarily due to the slightly high admission cost and the restrictions on bringing our own food and drinks. However, we brought our own water in and that wasn’t a problem.

Nevertheless, the Quarry at Carrigan Farms offered us an incredible family day out, combining adventure, relaxation, and breathtaking natural beauty. If you’re in the area, it is a destination well worth considering for a unique and enjoyable family outing.

Located at 1261 Oak Ridge Farm Highway, Mooresville, NC, it’s an unforgettable stop you don’t want to miss. We’re already looking forward to our next visit!
